Gun debate takes center stage during INW marches supporting and opposing gun control

The March for Our Lives calls for stronger gun control measures while The March for Our Rights was organized as a counter protest against these measures.

SPOKANE, Wash.—As the debate on gun control takes center stage again Friday, organizers from two separate movements plan on marching over the weekend.

The March for Our Lives and March for Our Rights will happen across the nation and locally.

The March for Our Lives calls for stronger gun control measures while The March for Our Rights was organized as a counter protest against these measures.

The March for Our Lives will be held at noon on Saturday in front of the clock tower in River Front park.

This march was partially organized by local students.

Lewis and Clark High School student, Ellary Lockwood said she felt very afraid at school because of the school shootings that had gone on recently.

“We had a shooting at Freeman, so it definitely brought it home for a lot of me and my classmates, I know. This is very well something that could happen at LC and that’s just a really terrifying thing for us,” said Lockwood.

Many people who oppose gun control said they still felt that increased measures will be used infringe on their Second Amendment rights. They said that was why they were holding counter protests.

Organizer of the March for Our Rights in Sandpoint, Idaho Steve Wasylko said he feels like gun control will only impact law abiding citizens.

Wasylko said he doesn’t think those laws would make schools any safer.

“You know, I have kids. I want my kids to be safe in schools. Putting out another gun control law is doing absolutely nothing to make them safer, and it’s just distracting from the message,” said Wasylko.

Wasylko said what needs to happen to make schools safer is a discussion about what’s going on, why this is happening, and in the meantime what we need to do to stop people who are bent on violence like that.
