SANDPOINT, Idaho – One of Schweitzer Mountain Resort’s most beloved canine companions is hanging up his vest.

Chaco, an 11-year-old chocolate lab serving as an avalanche dog at Schweitzer, is retiring after nine years.

Dig Chrismer, marketing manager at Schweitzer, said Chaco is looking forward to “long walks on the beach and soaking up life” after more than 70 years of hard work – in dog years, that is.

Chaco will retire in Sandpoint but will travel throughout the nation, as he does have a doggy passport.

His retirement coincided with the last day of Schweitzer’s 2017-18 winter season.
